hi there!

it's probably a year since i first stumbled onto this amazing forum, so i guess that introductions are due:
my name is Chris; i'm from Singapore and currently living in NZ... wanted to become a guitarist but couldn't afford a guitar to practice on, so decided that two drumsticks were cheaper! jokes! anyway, i've been playing drums as a hobby now for three years, and have just begun to discover what it's all about...

which leads me to a question i've always wondered but dared not ask: what makes Vinnie's drums parts different from everyone else's? could you explain it in the way that given a certain groove, why is Vinnie's playing considered "sick", and what would be different to how another "normal" player would approach that same groove?

thanks in advance for your kind responses to my ignorance!

hi granz and welcome.
explaining why Vinnie is such a monster would take too long so i suggest you should listen to some cd's he's played on.like the ones with zappa.that should help you understand why we all love and revere to him.
he took drumming to a new level mixing perfectly incredible technique and perfect musicality.

i think you have to be mature and have a wide knowledge of different drummers to see why vinnie is so special. For the first 2 years of my life i couldnt understand what was so special about him...but then one day it hit me and i was like wtf!!! now hes my biggest inspirational and my idol. i mean my email is vinnieisgod so u can imagine haha, i mean there is a drummer in my school loves jordison and spug but doesnt like steve smith or vinnnie cos he thinks they are boring players:|

Ho-hum...now, that IS indeed boring talk...

[Sounds more like he's the boring drummer...] [Or, a "look at me; aren't I cool & clever because I say VC/SS aren't" type of person...[answer, quite frankly: - NOPE.]...or, as if he's a teen or early 20's - still no excuse...as that's quite a display of ignorance, if not bad taste of opinion ;cP]...

I guess Zappa, Sting, Vanelli, G Mathieson, Hakim, Hass, Bissonette, Stv Holmes, Pedro Galindo, Todd Sucherman, Marc Atkinson [on & on] & say, a guy like Dennis "We were ALL schooled by Vinnie here tonight!" Chambers don't know what they're talking about when they laud praises about VC's playing...

Guess I shouldn't be making a deal out of it...after all, opinions can & do often change with the expansive experience of time in life...[as in, "gee - wtf was i thinking/did i know, back then?!" ;c) :cP

hey guys, thanks so much for the information...

i actually do have 'Joe's Garage', 'Document', 'Jing Chi', and Vinnie's self-titled release...

still, although i can sorta hear the difference, i still don't "get it" in that sense, you know? am i not listening closely enough? do some of you guys have tabs that can point out the difference so that i can have some kind of reference point?
i mean i know that Vinnie plays some mean metric modulation, but Sting didn't require Vinnie to play that, yet he still lauds his praises... i can understand how the groove on 'Seven Days' is amazing (the four superimposed over the five), but is that all there is to being "Vinnie"? can you guys explain what makes his approach so unique and untouchable?

and oh yeah Fuse: i just recently spent some hard cash on a Gretsch Reknown Maple kit with K Custom Dark cymbals; do i really have to pawn those off?
